SF 220 – Early retirement incentives for local school districts

FLOOR ACTION:

SF 220 is a retirement fix for early retirement incentives in local school districts. Current Code says a school district may offer an early retirement incentive package to teachers ages 55 to 65. The bill changes it to age 55 or older so as not discriminate against those teachers who have continued teaching past age 65. This bill passed the Senate last year and recently passed the House unanimously. A technical amendment adjusts the date by which a district can use the management levy to pay for early retirement costs of any employee 55 and older. It also makes the bill effective upon enactment. As districts move to certify their budgets by the April 15 deadline, certainty about the ability to use the management levy for this purpose is important.
