Keeping up with dangerous meth labs

Manufacturing meth is a dangerous process that creates a destructive drug. Since 2005, the Legislature has been working to give law enforcement the tools they need to go after those who make meth.

One-pot meth labs, also known as “shake ‘n’ bake” labs, are now on the rise. Shake ‘n’ bake meth is made by combining common household chemicals in a plastic soda bottle. These labs are gaining in popularity because they’re inexpensive and require few skills. In addition, their small size makes them easier to conceal from law enforcement. However, one-pot labs are extremely dangerous and pose a threat to unsuspecting Iowans with the potential for fires, explosions, spills and chemical exposure.

In an effort to help law enforcement crack down on the latest trend in meth making, the Senate recently approved House File 159. The bill adds four new substances to the list of chemicals that will be illegal to possess for the purpose of making meth: sodium hydroxide, ammonia nitrate, ammonia sulfate, and light or medium petroleum distillate. Simply possessing these substances will not be illegal. Law enforcement must prove that an individual intends to make meth with the ingredients.
