A change to the Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit (HF 616) was approved by the Legislature this spring and signed into law late last week.

The change makes applications for the tax credit retroactive to January 1, 2014. Applications must be received by the county assessor’s office no later than the close of business on June 30.

The Disabled Veteran Homestead Property Tax Credit is available to all service-connected disabled veterans, family members receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, and Individual Unemployable disabled veterans who are certified and paid at the 100 percent level by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Earlier this session, legislators approved HF 166, which clarifies “Individual Unemployability” is included in the total 100 percent service-connected disability rating.

If you did not qualify for the tax credit and think these bills may help you, please check with your county assessor or county V.A. service officer this month. For more information, contact the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs at 1-800-838-4692 or go to www.va.iowa.gov/images/disabled_vet_homestead.pdf.
