With school back in session, make sure you follow Iowa’s school bus safety laws when driving.
Passed unanimously in 2012, Kadyn’s Law is aimed at preventing tragic deaths and serious injuries to Iowa’s school children while boarding or unloading from a school bus. The law was named for Kadyn Halverson, age 7, of Northwood, who was killed when struck by a pickup as she crossed the road to board a school bus in 2011.
Kadyn’s Law increased the criminal penalties for passing a stopped school bus and made illegally passing a stopped school bus a serious moving violation. A person’s Iowa driving privilege will be suspended 30 days for a first conviction, 90 days for a second conviction, and 180 days for a third or subsequent conviction.
