As the weather warms, many Iowans are beginning outdoor projects. Iowa law requires anyone digging or excavating to notify Iowa One Call, the free underground utilities locating service.

Homeowners, contractors and anyone planning to dig should call 811 or go to www.iowaonecall.com to let utilities know where they’ll be working. Underground facility locating professionals will find and mark the proposed area of excavation within 48 hours. After that, digging can begin.

Failure to notify Iowa One Call could have serious consequences, such as coming in contact with high-voltage electric or natural gas lines, and may include civil penalties, fines and liability for damages. Electrical and natural gas services, communication and broadband connectivity, potable water and sewer functions are some of the essential services that could be interrupted if you dig without knowing where they are located.
