Iowa hunters can help feed the hungry thanks to Iowa’s popular deer donation program, Help Us Stop Hunger (HUSH).The 5,281 deer donated by hunters in 2012 provided 800,000 meals to needy Iowa families.
Here’s how the program works: Hunters contact a participating locker before bringing in a whole, field-dressed deer. Once at the locker, they fill out a donation card. The locker processes the deer into two-pound packages of ground meat, and the Food Bank of Iowa distributes the packages to local food pantries.
Iowa’s bow season reopens Dec. 23 to Jan. 10, 2014. Shotgun season runs through Dec. 22.
