COMMITTEE ACTION:
SSB 1022, as amended in Committee, establishes two intake and classification centers for inmates within the Department of Corrections. Under current law, the Iowa Medical and Classification Center (Oakdale) does the intake for all offenders who are sentenced to prison. This bill adds the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women (Mitchellville) as an additional intake and classification center for the Department of Corrections. With the addition of Mitchellville, female offenders will be sent directly to Mitchellville for intake rather than having to go to Oakdale prior to being transferred to Mitchellville. SSB 1024 grants district court clerks the authority to file guardianship and conservatorship petitions as one proceeding with one docket number. The Code instructs clerks to file these actions separately; however, the current practice is to file the petitions jointly. Combining these actions will reduce case processing.
